The Real "long-distance" Wireless Charging Technology is Here!

May 18, 2022
Last year, Apple announced support for wireless charging in its new generation of iPhones (8, 8 plus, and X).

The first reaction of many netizens is to cheer that they can finally get rid of the mobile phone charging data line. It is not a dream to play pesticides with 10% of the electricity.

But after careful understanding, I found that this function is very tasteless. The Qi wireless charging standard supported by Apple still requires the mobile phone to be charged on the charging pad, as shown below:

Originally, some friends thought that their charging board was placed on the table, and the mobile phone could be charged by the bedside, but the mobile phone did not support charging when it was about 1cm away;
Even when he chose a thicker phone case, it couldn't charge.
This is a bit of a pit, it is better to choose wired charging directly.
But now "long-distance" wireless charging technology may finally be practical.

Wireless charging company Ossia is partnering with electronics maker Molex to launch the first products this year that will enable wireless charging "within a few meters."

Its Cota technology, which uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas as receivers, allows the system to charge devices over 15 feet (4.6 meters) and travel through walls.

Cota converters can serve dozens of mobile devices within a few meters and are installed in a variety of styles.

By connecting two Cota "ceilings", the system can power mobile devices in coffee shops, offices or other public spaces.

In addition, Ossia has developed AA batteries that can receive wireless charging.

Ossia miniaturized its chipsets and built them into AA batteries, allowing any device that uses them to charge wirelessly from a distance of more than 15 feet.

Through the tiny antenna, Cota wireless devices can be activated, managed and monitored through the Cota Cloud web platform.
Its power receivers are so small that they can be embedded in IoT devices, wearables and many other electronic devices.

But as a wireless technology, devices must be charged over considerable distances, and Cota is still less efficient than wired charging, about 30 percent of that of dedicated chargers.
